2012: Greatest Year for Movies?

The year of the apocalypse better have some good movies

Mayan jokes aside, the upcoming year looks very promising for moviegoers. Multiple big titles are finally being unveiled and we could not be any happier.

Let’s start with the superhero movies.

In the Marvel world of comics, the Avengers will debut May 4th unleashing a whole ensemble of spandex-wearing bad-guy bashers. Meanwhile over in DC comics, Christopher Nolan showcases the final installment to his Batman trilogy in The Dark Knight Rises which will release July 20th.

For Tarantino fans such as myself, Christmas day can’t come soon enough as Django Unchained opens in box offices December 25th. The movie features an all-star cast consisting of Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen and Kurt Russell. The story centers around a former slave who sets out to rescue his wife who is under the tyrannical reign of a Mississippi plantation owner.

For fans of the testosterone-fueled macho-fest that was 2010’s The Expendables, the sequel will open August 17th and this time Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme are added to the roster.

A little discussed film I am also eagerly awaiting for 2012 is Max Brook’s World War Z. The movie is based on a 2006 novel of the same name chronicling the accounts of survivors who made it through the great zombie war. Brad Pitt will play the lead role and in my opinion is a fitting actor for such a serious undertaking.

Last but definitely not least is Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit which will open December 14th. The fantasy epic has been long-awaited by faithful and adoring fans of Jackson’s previous fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. I squealed with delight at the announcement of the first trailer so imagine my reaction upon opening day (let’s just say my after I see this movie my life will be complete so bring on the end of the world). Sorry couldn’t resist.

My final diagnosis on 2012 cinematically? I can’t think of a year with a better packed schedule of awesome-looking movies. Without a doubt this year will go down as one of the greatest in cinema history. Looks like midnight premieres will make 2012 a year of major sleep deprivation for me.
