Twas the Night Before Christmas the 25th, this is where it’s at!

Christmas Eve, a day of merriment, anticipation, and last-second preparations. There is no other day when a kid can be as excited and as full of an interminable rush of energy than the day before the greatest day of the year.

In my family, we celebrate Christmas Eve like it’s the real deal and Christmas as a quiet after party but with more presents. Yes like the well-accepted societal custom, we only open one present on Christmas Eve although I did open two this year because I’m just so darn impatient.

The reason my Christmas Eve upstages the holiday it is named after is because the whole family gets together this night and we all exchange gifts, eat food, and have a great time. On Christmas day the family is scattered to celebrate with their own children while I spend it with my parents in a house that seems like a ghost town compared to the night before.

I realize that this is not the case for many families, Christmas is probably ten times better than the day before. However I think that credit is long overdue for this somewhat overlooked spin-off holiday. There needs to be a warm-up period for such a momentous holiday like Christmas or else it seems like the celebration of family disappears instantly.

I would like to wish all my readers a very merry Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, whichever one you want to be merrier is up to you.
