Public Speaking

Everyone’s worst nightmare

It has been reported that world-wide, people actually fear public speaking more than death. This is quite the achievement for a practice that has garnered the success and admiration of countless individuals over the course of history. However, it goes without saying that speaking in front of others is understandably frightening. I can’t think of one person I know who has ever felt completely comfortable with speaking in front of others all the time. It is a daunting task to assemble the courage to speak your mind in front of a crowd because there is always that list of maybes that people run through their brains: maybe I’m wrong, maybe they don’t care about what I have to say, maybe they won’t like me after they hear my views, etc. However, a strong charismatic approach to public speaking is a shining quality that is unmistakably sought after these days. In this generation, I see more and more of people who like to hide themselves away from the world while speaking from an invisible pedestal about their views and critiques on society. How can opinions be taken seriously if no one has the tenacity to speak outright for themselves? The only remedy for the fear of public speaking is to publicly speak! Start out small, you will sound incompetent and oblivious but that does not matter. The skill will develop over time until it becomes as easy as talking to friends and family. There are no leaders that don’t take chances and public speaking is definitely one of them.
