An Ode to Youtube Comments

Nowadays, YouTube has become a two-trick pony across the digital media landscape. The first trick being the video of course while the second trick is one that isn’t as talked about but just as deserving: The comments . I am talking about the witty and sometimes revealing little notes that viewers leave concerning the video. The two highest rated comments are usually the ones that are most worth your time but I have on occasion found other “lesser” comments being just as interesting. It’s become instinctual for me to look at the two highest rated comments as soon as the video is done because I feel half the enjoyment is in finding what people have to say. Yes, I know like 80% of the time someone just posts stupid, obnoxious comments or there’s a giant war over stupid topics that started like twelve pages ago. This is not to take away from the experience though because sure enough you’ll always find that one comment that will make you want to see more. If you think about it, the same stupid, obnoxious viewers are the ones that keep the videos we like alive. I had a conversation earlier with a friend how he hates it when people he doesn’t like, enjoy the same music as him. It’s an unfortunate byproduct of music’s popularity but a necessary one. Without these stupid, ignorant, sometimes racist, trolling, nonsensical viewers, we’d have never heard of the grape lady, the Winnebago man, lonely island, or Antoine Dodson. Just face it, we need the idiots whether we like it or not so I say honor the comments section.
